Yeast infections are caused by various fungi that exist naturally on the skin and mucous membranes of the mouth and digestive system, usually controlled by a robust immune system, a healthy skin barrier, and friendly bacteria.
However, a weakened immune system, antibiotic use, or skin damage caused by lacerations or moist, humid conditions can cause a rapid overgrowth of the fungus or reduce the helpful bacteria that prevent yeast overgrowth.
For instance, skin folds or creases in the lower abdomen are a common site of infection, occurring where skin rubs against skin. This action weakens the skin and traps moisture. Antibiotics, necessary for bacterial infections, kill the helpful bacteria that would typically prevent yeast overgrowth.
People with diabetes have increased infection risk, including yeast, because of damage to the circulatory system and nerves that keep skin healthy. Frequent yeast infections are often a warning sign of poorly controlled blood sugar levels.

Vaginal yeast infections are also common during pregnancy because of hormonal changes that affect the pH balance of the vagina. Always check with your physician before using any medication during pregnancy, including over-the-counter yeast treatments.
Symptoms of a yeast infection depend on where the infection develops and may include:
Vaginal yeast infections can cause severe itching, external redness, pimple-like rash, and a discharge resembling cottage cheese.
Symptoms typically occur on the underside of the penis and include a scaly red rash that may burn or itch.
Symptoms of oral thrush include irritation and redness, white patches on the inner cheeks, gums, and tongue, and discomfort with swallowing if the infection spreads to the throat. Notably, various inhalers used to treat asthma can cause oral thrush. Denture wearers may also be at increased risk.
Angular cheilitis, affecting the mouth’s outer corners, causes a dry, irritated rash and tiny cracks or tears in the skin.
Yeast affecting the nail beds may cause yellowing and separation of nails from the bed, swelling, pain, and purulent drainage. Yeast nail infections are often related to excessive hand washing, prolonged use of medical gloves, or sweaty feet.
Fungal infections occurring in the skin folds or navel area cause irritation and redness that may eventually ooze pus as the top skin layers break down. Another common symptom is an itchy, pimple-like rash that may spread beyond the skin folds.
